Manchester United vs. Rayo Vallecano result: Ten Hag’s side held to 1-1 preseason draw as Ronaldo returns

Manchester United’s 2022/23 preseason campaign came to a disappointing end as they drew 1-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano on Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford debut.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return and ten Hag’s home bow were the big pre-game storylines for United but the former only lasted 45 minutes and the latter was left frustrated at full-time.

Ronaldo’s replacement Amad Diallo edged the hosts in front just after the break before Rayo’s Alvaro Garcia poked the La Liga side level late on.

Ten Hag was visibly annoyed at the final whistle as he gears up for their Premier League curtain raiser against Brighton on August 7.

Rusty Ronaldo remains unconvinced by United stay

All eyes were on the returning Ronaldo ahead of kick off with the United fans giving their No.7 a rousing reception at Old Trafford.

His ongoing stance of wanting to leave the club in search of Champions League football remain unchanged and a low key 45 minutes against Rayo has changed nothing.

Manchester United - Ronaldo - Fernandes

Ten Hag confirmed Ronaldo’s lack of match fitness would make a full match almost impossible for the Portuguese veteran despite some flashes of quality before the break.

He is certain to not feature against Brighton next weekend, and if his future is resolved in the coming weeks, his absence from preseason could mean he is not up to full power until September.

Eriksen shines on Old Trafford bow

Summer signing Eriksen has been eased into action by ten Hag but he produced a typically assured performance in midfielder on his Old Trafford debut.

The Dane provided a focal point for United to build within the attacking third as a genuine No.10 option linking between Donny van de Beek, Ronaldo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Christian Eriksen

Ten Hag opted to withdraw him after 60 minutes but his ability to switch play to younger legs around him to dictate United’s tempo shows his ability to pick locks in the coming campaign.

More questions than answers for ten Hag on Old Trafford bow

Ten Hag has consistently looked to put his stamp on United during preseason but their final two results have reopened major questions over his squad.

Defeat in Oslo to Atletico and a tepid showing against Rayo will leave the former Ajax boss facing some big calls in the coming weeks.

Erik ten Hag Manchester United

Positive signs from fellow debutants Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez should assure their places against Brighton but issues in both full-back spots, a lack of a natural ball winner and an alternative to Ronaldo still remain from last season.

Eriksen’s pass releases Alex Telles in space, his strike is spilled by substitute keeper Diego Lopez, with Amad immediately on hand to prod home the opener.

RONALDO IS OFF……..with Amad Diallo replacing him at the break!

All square at the break at Old Trafford with United edging the contest in terms of chances. Garnacho has been full of tricks, with Eriksen controlling the midfield, but no breakthrough for United, with Ronaldo and debutant Eriksen both off target.

5 Mins to KO: Ten Hag confirms Ronaldo plan against Rayo Vallecano

With Ronaldo only playing a limited role in United’s preseason, ten Hag is unsure how long he will last against Rayo, after only returning to training five days ago.

The Portuguese superstar continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford as he seeks to play Champions League football in 2022/23.

“It’s Ronaldo’s first time, he’s had one-week training and we will see.  He needs games and a lot of training still.”

10 Mins to KO: Ten Hag all set for his Old Trafford debut!!

25 Mins to KO: United fans making their feelings over Ronaldo’s future clear ahead of KO at Old Trafford.

40 Mins to KO: United new faces getting a taste of the Old Trafford pre-game atmosphere!!!

The major pre-game narrative has come true with Ronaldo making his first appearance in United’s preseason campaign alongside home debuts for summer signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Former United striker Radamel Falcao starts for the visitors alongside highly rated duo Isi Palazon and Fran Garcia.

90 minutes to kickoff: Erik ten Hag will lead Man United for the first time at Old Trafford. If the good vibes he talks about below are to continue into next weekend’s Premier League debut, a good showing by his reserve side, and perhaps a few goals for Cristiano Ronaldo, wouldn’t hurt.

Manchester United vs. Rayo Vallecano lineups
